Five Songs is an ESP offsite project happening across two days as part of Winterreise/Winter Journey, a collaboration with Sue Ball, MAAP and many others.
For Five Songs selected ESP members will present new work in the rough, industrial space of Unit 7, Minerva Works. Taking the song cycle Winterreise as its starting point, Five Songs examines the voices of five artists: Tracy Hickinbottom, Michael Lightborne, Samuel Rodgers, Kevin Ryan and Rafal Zar, who work across painting, sculpture, sound and video. The off-site project is free and open to all from Friday 14 to Saturday 15 December.

DC Fontana are like sonic timelords, continually re-generating & re-inventing themselves with a stream of classy music to defy genre labelling.
Creating turned-on music to shake your hips & pluck your heartstrings with rhythm & bruise . . . . the DCs are like musical chameleons changing colour & never standing still.
The 2012 edition of the band is fronted by two girl singers while founding member Mark Mortimer plays bass & is one of the two main song-writers along with Scott Riley who used to play with Spectrum, the psychedelic off-shoot of the Spacemen 3.
New singer Louise Turner joins the DCs after singing on the Mercury Prize-winning & platinum-selling Elbow album ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ while Spanish chanteuse Miri May recently sang backing vocals with King Mob featuring original Sex Pistol Glen Matlock before joining the group.
DC Fontana have also added a brand new and top quality horn section although all of them have played live with the band on numerous occasions in the past year.

The piano trio, featuring Andy Bunting (piano), Nick Jurd (double bass) and Jonathan Silk (drums) is a swinging group working in and around the Birmingham area. Playing in various different venues for gigs and private functions, the band is building a strong reputation through regular playing, particularly at The Old Joint Stock. Playing many well known Jazz standards and exploring the tradition of Jazz music, the band is focussing on creating inventive music and entertaining listeners.

Do you LOVE music but have never had an opportunity to play it? African drumming is an accessible way to play as part a group and sound amazing! Using traditional African instruments: Djembe, Dun Dun and Bell, we will explore rhythms, playing in a group, improve our drumming and make great music together !!! High Eye Q
From seven sides of the country High Eye Q have finally formulated together in Birmingham. Although they are not the first of their kind, and undoubtedly won't be the last, their careful attention to bringing classic Hip Hop sounds together with a Jazz orientated twist separates them apart from others.
With their two MCs growing up heavily rooted in Hip-Hop, and the rest of the band deriving from an wide array of genres, together they create an eclectic fusion of sounds that could captivate any audience.
Swift '89 is an MC and producer from Derby, who currently resides in Birmingham. He spent his teen years at open mic nights and at 16 formed Midlands collective Soul Alliance with DJ BFG (Mud Family associate), Alex Blood, SC and Vigilant. Swift's debut mixtape '89 Ways' was released soon afterwards, which received local acclaim across the Midlands. Soul Alliance disbanded in 2009.
Swift '89 has appeared on tracks with UK hip-hop heavyweights such as Baby J, Skinnyman, Rukus, Dap-C, Young Kof and Yogi. He's featured on BBC's 1Xtra and Asian Network radio stations, and appeared on Channel AKA and MTV Base. After spending the last 2 years under the radar working hard, he's back with the Birmingham based band High Eye Q, and a new solo mixtape set for a 2012 release.
Ol’ Man G Aka Benz is an up and coming MC and Producer from Oxford, now also based in Birmingham. He has been an established member of the Oxford Hip-Hop scene for nearly 7 years and has supported the likes of KRS –One, Klashnekoff and Lowkey to name a few.
Jack James, Chris Young and Dorian Childs-Prophet are currently studying Jazz performance at Birmingham Consevatoire; whilst Tom Ford and Ash Trigg have now both graduated, they all are heavily involved in the Jazz circuit in Birmingham, and frequently gig around the UK as session players, and with other bands and projects.
