Free Events: Emilia Mitiku, 6 Feb 2013
6 Feb 2013 - Rock & Pop at The Yardbird
For Emilia Mitiku, there is one word to describe her new album, ‘I Belong To You‘: honest. This quality is more important to Emilia than it might be to other singers – the type, perhaps, who set their cap and stardom and stop at nothing to achieve it. Emilia had a taste of that world when, in 1999, as Emilia Rydberg, she had a worldwide hit with the single ‘Big Big World’, going on to sell more than 4.5m records.
Emilia, the daughter of a Swedish mother and the revered and pioneering Ethiopian singer, Teshome Mitiku, grew up immersed in the music of Etta, Ella, Eartha and Billie, and it was to these early loves that she knew she would one day return: it was only a matter of when.

Free Events: Sunday Social: Marc Carroll, 3 Feb 2013
3 Feb 2013 - Rock & Pop at The Yardbird
Plus Melissa Hollick & Harry Hudson
In the past 20 years Marc Carroll has travelled from his native Dublin to London and back and then onto Los Angeles to pursue his musical vision. Carroll has experienced the frustration that comes with folding labels, collapsing deals, misguided marketing gambits, wrongheaded artist development. Along the way he’s gathered famous fans among some of his key inspirations – Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, – and had a bizarre, but remunerative, liaison with Top US TV show Friends.
The commercial breakthrough that would assuredly endear his music to a wider audience has thus far proved elusive but Carroll’s devotion to his art has never faltered. His albums stand as a tribute to both his single-minded determination and carefully nurtured talent. The influence of the folk, punk, country and blues records to the charged harmony pop that inspired him – The Beach Boys to Husker Du, Hank Williams to Neil Young – flow through Carroll’s music.
