About the Lecture: The repositioning of the world’s economies has led to a focus towards value creation and innovation. Yet it has taken five years to achieve a point where the seeds of recovery are beginning to germinate and the question is; could this have been achieved sooner had the reliance on service provision and finance not been the driving force behind perceived economic value?

Free Events: Capital Sun, Tori Lamb, Caitlin Hart, 20 Feb 2013
20 Feb 2013 - Rock & Pop at The Yardbird
Formed in the winter of 2010, Capital Sun are a four-piece acoustic rock band from Birmingham. The band’s major influences are bands and artists from the late 60s early 70s, which combined with very current lyrical themes, gives them a pertinent sound to today’s listener. The band began as an acoustic duo, with founder members Glen Boden & Andrew Smith. Over time the songs required a bigger sound, so Andy started playing the electric guitar and two new members were recruited in the form of Luke Weston & Chris Taylor. This is when they became Capital Sun.

Free Events: Derrick D & The Backbones, 19 Feb 2013
19 Feb 2013 - Spoken Word at The Yardbird
**FREE!!!!!**
Derrick D is one of Birmingham's most eclectic spoken word artists. He's done solo performances and performed with a variety of musicians, including John Morris' jazz trio. Most recently he has teamed with The Backbones, his own band consisting of Cath Reaney on Djembe drum & vocals, Andy Preece on guitar, Mick Jeynes on bass and the backing vocals of Tamar Whyte.
Derrick performs spoken word in a way you probably haven't heard before. His boundless energy sees him moving between speech, rap, song and sound effects. Each time he performs is slightly different, with his band listening and reacting to improvise to whatever mood he creates on the night. Derrick's background as a radio DJ for Newstyle Radio undoubtedly aids his ability to keep his audience entertained with endless anecdotes that have inspired his writing.
Derrick's recent performances of 'She Mixes The Ingredients' - inspired by Kate Knight's attempted murder of her husband by poisoning him with antifreeze, and 'The Hand of the Star' - an ode to Barry Knight, were well received at two separate performances at The Yardbird.
With the atmospheric sound effects of Andy, funky basslines from Mick, haunting vocals and beats from Cath, and the variety of vocals from Tamar that range from sweet sounds to manic laughter, this is something you won't have heard anywhere else.
Derrick D & The Backbones will be performing a 20 minute set at the Acoustic Lounge Lizard, Tuesday 19 February, at The Yardbird, Paradise Place, Birmingham, B3 3HJ.
The night kicks off at 7.00pm and finishes at 10pm, and Derrick's set will be sometime after 8pm, alongside a variety of other talented acts.
