The UK's premier funk band started out as a quartet gigging in small clubs in the Southeast of England in 1999, playing classic funk tunes by artists such as The Meters and The JB's. The band soon expanded, adding the now renowned horn section and vocalists in 2001, which has enabled them to deliver the powerhouse deep funk sound they're known for today.

Over the years, Speedometer has worked with many of the US funk legends including Sir Joe Quarterman, Eddie Bo, Marva Whitney, Sharon Jones, James Bell (Highlighters), Lee Fields, and Billy Wooten. All the artists were blown away by Speedometer's authenticity to the original soul-funk sound.

In 2000, the first single (now very collectable) was released "Soul Safari" on the NY Soul Fire Records and soon followed several other releases by other labels. Each limited 45 single sold out to a rapidly growing funk audience. Three years later the band joined forces with Blow it Hard Records to release the first Speedometer LP “THIS IS SPEEDOMETER (VOL.I)” and then two years later, “VOL2” which blended their love of heavy deep funk but fused it with soul and latin grooves. This gave the eagerly awaiting funk fans and DJ's two of the best new funk albums with classic dancefloor anthems such as their re-working of Beyonce’s “Work it out”.

In 2006 came the first release on Freestyle records; “DIGGIN DEEPER” which was the first time all the early 45’s were made available on a CD. A year later, they released the fourth studio LP “FOUR FLIGHTS UP” which was regarded by many DJ’s and promoters as the best funk album for 10years. As well as the soulful vocals of Ria Currie the LP included 2 new recordings with legendary US funk/soul singer Robert Moore.

Speedometer is known across the world for the high energy live shows and in 2009 they released “SOUL GROOVING live” CD which showcases the bands super tight dynamic funk show.

Speedometer has toured all over UK, Europe and Japan over the last 10 years leading to the release of the critically acclaimed LP “The Shakedown” featuring Snowboy, DJ Format, soul vocalists Myles Sanko, Natasha Watts and the legendary Martha High.

During 2012 the band collaborated with James Brown’s soul diva; Martha High, to record and release her long awaited solo alarm “Soul Overdue”. This album showcases Martha’s incredible vocal talent and is backed by the tough funky soul grooves of Speedometer.
